So you're wanting to go to a recording studio and record a song or maybe an entire EP or Album. Here are 4 Pre-Production tips that will help the independent artist BEFORE you get to the studio.
#1 - Choose your key! It may seem like an obvious thing to do, but many times an artist has a "sweet spot" in their vocal range. It's that place where their vocal tone and comfort sounds the best for them. Make sure you choose a key where the lowest part of the song melodically, and this highest part of the song, are notes you can reach with relative comfort.
#2 - Choose your tempo! Don't wait until you get to the studio do determine your beats per minute (tempo). We call this BPM. With the adrenaline and excitement, or nervousness of being in the studio, you may not dial that tempo in where you ultimately want it or where it's best for the song. There are several apps available for BPM, download one and work with your song until you have a tempo that feels best for you ... and especially for the song.
#3 - Select Your Style! If you're having music tracks created before you get to the studio or while you're there, do some homework on what you'd like to hear in your music production/tracks in regard to style. Find 2 or 3 songs that are in the ballpark in regard to a style you're targeting. Use these are examples of the music direction you want your production to be geared toward.
#4 - Practice, Rehearse, Repete! It's number four on the list but it can't be overemphasized that this one tip will make your studio experience BETTER! Record yourself on your phone or other device every few days and study what you're doing, listen close! There's an old saying, "familiarity breeds contempt!". You may find things you want to change about your performance but you can't know this unless you're very familiar with it! Many independent artists walk away from the studio and after 6 months of listening to what they thought was their best performance, have become familiar with it enough to know they would do it different. So practice, rehearse ... record yourself ... listen and study... then REPEAT!
